The Monday Morning WHIP // 183

Sometimes the most basic of things seem to work the best.

Here at Junior we get many people asking us how to set up an appointment to see people.

So this week I’m going to let you in on a secret – it’s called a telephone.

Use it to ring the person you want to see, ask them if you can come in to show your work to them, then make a time.

And that’s how it’s done.

Easy huh?

Well yes it is, but it isn’t, because nine times out of ten the person you want to talk to isn’t available and you go through to their voicemail.

In this case leave a message but don’t expect them to ring you back.

Senior people have got departments to run and clients to keep happy, so wannabe creatives are pretty low on their list of priorities.

The key to getting an appointment is to be persistent.

Ring again the next day. If need be leave another message.

Eventually you will get through to them and chances are, they will be familiar with your name because they will have heard it on their voicemail a couple of times.

You could also try emailing them, but given they probably get about 100 emails a day, chances are your email will not get noticed.

So make a list of the people you want to see, write yourself a short script so you say exactly what you want to say, and get to work on the phone.
